One of these days I might just cave in and bake a chocolate cake with a whole lot of frosting. Until then I’ll have to just keep posting about our everyday meals. Once in a while (R)oomie gets a craving for gluten/seiten, now that he knows it’s jus a matter of letting me know a night before.
Tip: This time when I kneaded the dough I used a colander - the effort required reduced quite a bit that way.
This post has 3 dishes and is a complete meal in itself. We added a few cherries a the end of it all as a desert to end the meal on a sweet note… It’s not cherry season but we just got lucky :D
After I made the seiten which is really a very simple process, we separated it into two batches.
Using one batch we made a dish that looked like boneless chicken but tasted nothing like it.
What you will need
Oven preheated to 350F
Seiten - freshly made cut into pieces 2” each
Onion - 1 big sliced to 1/2” thickness
Canola oil - 1/2 Tbson
Ginger garlic paste - 1 Tspn
Soy Sauce - 1/2 Cup
Mix the above ingredients and let it marinate for 15-20 minutes. This can also be left in the fridge overnight if you want to use the next day.
Place the mixture in an oven friendly dish and let it roast for about 30 minutes. Once you see the sauces bubbling you can be sure your dish is ready. Every 10 minutes or so carefully mix the ingredients to make sure it doesn’t stick.
Serve hot with rice.
Fried Seiten with Zucchini:
What you will need
Seiten - freshly made sized into 2” pieces.
Zucchini – Sliced into 1” pieces
Onion – 1 medium size sliced thin
Garlic – 2 pods finely chopped
Oil – 1 Tbspn separated
Brown sugar – 1 Tspn
Salt & Pepper to taste
Heat ½ Tbspn oil in a pan and fry the seiten. They puff up a bit and take sometime to be cooked properly so hold on and wait for it to fry and lose the raw gluten taste. Once done keep them aside. Heat the remaining oil in the wok and add onion and zucchini and the garlic and saute for 4-5 minutes. Add the salt pepper and sugar and finally add some water or vegetable broth to make it a runny. Add the fried seiten and cook for a bit. Let the fried seiten soak for a bit before you serve.
Ohh yeah the desert - the 3rd and the most important!
